SECRET LIFE OF HOUDINI – SLOMAN AND KALUSH
$40.00 – $150.00
While working with Blaine, he introduced me to his producer, Bill Kalush, who has the largest private magic library in the U.S. Kalush provided me with any magic book I needed for the Blaine project. As part of David’s book, we did a chapter on Houdini and I read all the literature on that great magician. After going through all that, I commented to Bill that there seemed to be strange twists in the Houdini story that made no logical sense. Bill had a letter from an English rival of Houdini’s that suggested that Houdini might be a spy. The more we investigated that the more we came to that conclusion: Houdini was doing espionage for the British intelligence services and probably did the same earlier in his career for the Secret Service in the U.S. So we put together a presentation with the help of master mentalist Michael Weber and sold a book that would examine these issues and more. We also stumbled upon correspondence between Houdini and spiritualists who Houdini had turned in his investigations into phony spirit mediums. We were shocked at the all-out war between Houdini and the spiritualists and the second half of our book led us to raise the question: Was Houdini silenced by the Spiritualists? The book made tidal waves in the magic community and Lionsgate purchased the option to do a big budget movie on Houdini. And it’s always nice when your research and diligence is appreciated by reviewers: “Kalush and Sloman appear to have raked through every known Houdini archive to produce the most comprehensive and controversial biography ever written about the man, with its contention that he was a spy who may have been murdered by a cult.” — Tony Barrell, London Sunday Times
